Altbridge Park Tower Blocks
This project comprised asbestos removal and demolition of 3 blocks of
16-17 storey blocks of flats in a residential area, immediately adjacent
to the A580 East Lancashire Road.
Main Points:
- The tower blocks were of steel framed construction, arranged around a
central insitu reinforced concrete lift / stair core that provided overall
stability. The floor slabs were of insitu concrete, poured over ‘holorib’
type metal decking, which acted as both permanent shuttering and reinforcement.
- One block was close to the adjacent housing estate access road, and we
therefore arranged for a partial road closure to increase demolition safety
buffer zone. This allowed us to use an ultra long reach excavator to
demolish the whole block.
The project included:
- Liaison with statutory undertakers to arrange / coordinate removal of gas,
water and electrical services (including substation within tower block).
- Liaison with local residents.
- Safe removal & disposal of asbestos materials.
- Strip out of lift shafts to allow use as debris chutes.
- Soft strip of buildings to strip it back to bare concrete / brickwork, thereby
simplifying following recycling operations.
- Demolition of all structures to ground level using ultralong reach demolition methods.
- Clearance and recycling of debris arising.
- Excavation of foundations and pilecaps to depth of 2.5 metres.
- Backfilling and re-grading of site on completion.
- Finishing site with topsoil.
- Recycling rate for project = 96%
