Canning Place

This complex of multi-storey office / car parking / warehousing structures was formerly the main Liverpool City Council offices. It was located on a prominent city centre site, opposite the Albert Dock and between the Merseyside Police Headquarters and the Queen Elizabeth Crown Courts, with an operational fire station attached to one side.

The project involved demolition of the whole complex, removal of foundations and on-site recycling / deposition of approx 30,000 m3 of concrete arisings.

Main Points:
  • Successful completion of the works required close co-operation with neighbouring organisations, particularly the Fire Service; tight control of access to/from the site and control of noise and dust.
  • Following structural assessment, we were able to retain the 5m high perimeter rc wall running around much of the complex until very late in the project; this acted as a temporary dust screen during demolition / crushing / filling operations.
  • The structures were of insitu reinforced concrete construction, varying in height between five and eleven storeys, all linked by a three storey rc car parking / warehouse structure, the roof of which provided a central pedestrian ‘plaza’.
  • A main access road passed alongside the complex and under an eleven storey block, immediately adjacent to the fire station. The building bridged the road by means of a series of major post tensioned prestressed concrete beams, necessitating demolition using level by level demolition methods in tandem with staged progressive
    de-stressing of the support beams.
The project included:
  • Safe removal and disposal of asbestos based materials.
  • Demolition of 5-11 storey office / car park / warehousing complex on prominent city centre site, including staged de-stressing / deconstruction of major post tensioned concrete elements.
  • On site recycling of 30,000 m3 concrete arisings to DOT Type 1 subbase standard.
  • Filling, compaction, regrading of site.
