Henry Bath, Kirkby
This project was for the provision of hardstandings to allow the open air bulk storage of aluminum ingots, on a 2.5 acre former industrial site in Kirkby, close to our recycling centre at Simonswood.
The works involved:
- Clearance of old slabs, foundations, underground services and localised ground contamination.
- Separation brick / concrete rubble from unsuitable fills, then crushing and screening the 'hard' materials for re-use in the works.
- Installation of new drainage system.
- Filling and compaction and grading.
- Supplying and laying crushed brick and concrete hardstandings.
Two years later we were asked to return to site to upgrade the hardstandings to suit their use by heavy forklift plant. Based on our experience of the site, we designed and constructed a new 10,000 sq metre reinforced concrete apron by re-profiling the previously installed hardstandings to act as a sub-base, then overlaying them with a new reinforced concrete slab. The works were undertaken in stages to allow normal storage operations to continue throughout the works.
