Hetherlow Towers

This project related to the demolition of two blocks of 16 storey flats and an associated community centre in a residential area. The site was near a railway siding and much of it was underlain by railway ash, with pockets of heavy contamination.

The blocks had formerly been used as sheltered accommodation for the elderly and in order to maintain community spirit, new low rise housing had been built to house the residents (together with a new community centre) just 20m from the buildings to be demolished.

It entailed:

  • Liaison with statutory undertakers to arrange / coordinate removal of gas, water and electrical services.
  • Maintaining good community relations, especially with adjacent elderly residents.
  • Safe removal & disposal of asbestos materials.
  • Soft strip of buildings, leaving only brick and concrete in place.
  • Demolition of all structures to ground level using superlong reach demolition methods.
  • Clearance and recycling of debris arising.
  • Excavation of 3 metre deep foundations and pilecaps.
  • Electronic survey to plot locations of pile heads left in place, so as to simply the planning of foundations to follw-on construction works.
  • Investigation and testing of ground to identify contamination.
  • Excavation of contaminated ground, segregation / sorting to separate contaminants and disposal of contaminated material to suitable tip, together with the administration necessary for landfill tax exemption.
  • Filling and compaction of excavated areas using approved granular fill, to required profiles and levels.
  • Re-grading site to line and level and undertaking land survey on completion.
