Link Bridge Demolition, Port Sunlight

Decontamination, asbestos removal and demolition of a multispan enclosed link bridge structure, comprising 5No. 30 metre spans linking a factory production area with a headquarters building. The bridge crossed a main ‘A’ road and the main Chester to Liverpool railway line.

Successful completion of the project required:
  • Surveys of underground services and ground conditions to plan safe crane access and placement, followed by ground improvement to support crane outrigger loads.
  • Extensive Liaison with Railway and highways authorities to agree 2No weekend closures of the rail line and roadway, with coaches provided to provide alternative trransport for rail users.
  • Strengthening of steel bridge spans to ensure safe lifting and temporary stability of the structure. Advance breaching (at end of each bridge span) of asbestos lagged steam mains running along bridge roof, working over ‘live’ railway.
  • Removal of bridge spans and supports in sequence using tandem crane lifts, placing each section on telescopic trailers for transport to a processing area where asbestos lagged pipework would be removed and the bridge cut up for recycling. Works required 24 hour working to suit rail / road closures.
  • Demolition of access stairs at end of structure and accommodation works / making good to retained structure where bridge was removed.
