New Forge Foods
Brief Details
This was a six acre site, occupied by a mixture of building types (portal frame warehouses, framed structures, boiler houses, chimneys, offices etc). It had had a number of previous uses, the last of which was as a food factory.
The site had been unused for some time and had been subject to extensive vandalism, arson and fly tipping including a large amount of asbestos contaminated waste.
It was also found that extensive ground contamination was present due to leakage and spread of oils from old underground storage tanks.
The contract called for clearance of the whole site and enabling works (principally removal of contamination and construction of hardstandings, car parks etc to top of subbase level) to assist with the follow on development as a Morrisons Superstore.
The Works involved:
- The safe investigation, removal and disposal of approx 330 tonnes asbestos contaminated fly tipping.
- Safe removal and disposal of approx 320 tonnes asbestos (limpet, lagging, insulation board and asbestos cement cladding) from 6 acres of redundant factory / process buildings.
- Demolition / industrial dismantling of 6 acres of badly fire damaged / vandalised factory buildings.
- Dismantling by hand for re-use, of modern steel portal framed structure.
- Excavation of oversite hardstandings, foundations, substructures, drains, fat traps, tanks and the like.
- Site investigation to identify, trace, excavate, remove and dispose of extensive areas of oil contaminated subsoil.
- On site recycling including: classification, segregation, crushing, screening and regrading of approx 20,000m3 of arisings for re-use in the follow on construction project.
- Disposal of unsuitable materials.
- Administration of disposal records to allow recovery of Landfill Tax.
- Laying and compaction of granular fill and subbase in layers to falls and cross falls to form roads and car parking areas for new superstore.
- Reconstruction of perimeter brick walls.
