This block was situated in a residential area immediately adjacent to the main A580 East Lancashire Road between Liverpool and Manchester and close to the M57 motorway.
The work involved:
Extensive liaison with statutory undertakers (gas, water, electricity, data, all of whom had services in close proximity to the site), HSE, police. Local authorities, Highways Agency, Residents Associations and other stakeholders over a 6 month period, agreeing all necessary road closures, evacuations, security, public relations, emergency procedures etc.
Asbestos removal and soft strip of the building to remove all hazardous materials and materials which would either hinder following works or make recycling of the main brick and concrete arisings more difficult.
Pre-weakening of the structure in preparation for blow-down, removing partitions and sections of RC walls in key areas to ensure that blowdown followed the desired pattern.
Evacuation of all residents within 200m of block.
Blow down during a one hour closure of the A580 and M57 highways.
'Civilisation' of debris immediately following blow down.
Environmental clean-up.
Removal and recycling of all superstructure debris arising (crushing / screening to DOT 1 and 6F2 standard).
Excavation of all foundations and hardstandings.
Regrading site on completion and finishing with topsoil / grass seed.
